Plan Travertine Tile Floors for Kitchens and Bathrooms

3 minute read Material selection and project planning

Travertine tile can suit kitchens and bathrooms with a suitable finish and installation. Plan the support, moisture protection and daily care.

Choose for the room

A kitchen floor receives grit, food spills and regular cleaning. A bathroom floor receives water, soap and moisture. Select the stone and finish for these conditions.

A product photograph cannot establish wet-area suitability. Compare a sample and discuss the walking surface with the installer.

Choose travertine tile for the actual room
Location Review before ordering Care to plan
Kitchen floor Support, finished height, tile finish and the route from exterior doors. Remove grit and clean food spills promptly. Keep acidic food and cleaners off the stone.
Bathroom floor Wet walking conditions, transitions and the specified water-management system. Use compatible cleaners and remove soap residue and excess water.
Shower or other wet area Installer approval for the selected tile, substrate, waterproofing, slope and drains. Check products used on glass and fittings so they do not damage the adjacent stone.

Compare the finishes

Honed and filled tile has a generally smooth face with selected voids filled. Brushed and chiseled tile has a different texture and edge. Tumbled tile has its own surface character.

Read the tile finish comparison. Do not assume one finish name describes every travertine tile.

Plan the floor and wet areas

Natural stone needs a suitable substrate. Ask the installer to assess support, movement and flatness. Check total finished height at doors and drains.

Wet areas require the specified water-management system. Tile and grout alone do not make a shower or bathroom waterproof. Confirm slopes and movement joints before work starts.

Prepare for kitchen care

Acids in food or cleaners can etch travertine. Clean spills promptly with a compatible method. Use mats or protection where appropriate for the room.

Sealing travertine is optional. A sealer can reduce some absorption. It does not make the floor acid-proof. Consider how the natural surface will be maintained before you choose it.

Prepare for bathroom care

Keep cleaning products compatible with the stone and grout. Products intended for glass or sanitary fittings may not suit the floor.

Use a soft cleaning tool and an approved stone cleaner. Remove residue and excess water according to the product instructions. Review persistent damp areas with the installer.

A dull area after acid contact may be an etch rather than a stain. A stronger cleaner does not repair an etched finish. See the travertine tile cleaning guide for the cleaning sequence and the difference between staining and etching.

Review the specific tiles

Browse travertine tiles by color, size and finish. Check the actual thickness and coverage. Read tile thickness and tile installation planning.
