Sandblasted, Leathered and Tumbled Paver Finishes

3 minute read Material selection and project planning

Sandblasted, leathered and tumbled describe surface treatments, not types of stone. Sandblasting creates a textured face. Leathering works the surface to a different feel. Tumbling softens the edges and changes the surface character. Compare the actual stone, face, edges and wet-area requirements.

Sandblasted finish

Sandblasting changes the stone face to create a textured, matte surface. The degree of texture can vary by material and product.

Our Vanilla marble pavers include a sandblasted finish. Read the selected product specification and compare a sample. Do not assume every sandblasted stone has the same surface.

Leathered finish

A leathered finish gives the stone a worked surface with a different texture from a smooth honed face. The stone’s natural movement remains part of the appearance.

Check the exact catalogue finish rather than relying on a general photograph. Some marble selections use a leathered face.

Tumbled finish

Tumbling softens edges and changes the surface character. Travertine pores can remain visible in an unfilled tumbled product.

A tumbled marble product and a tumbled travertine product do not have identical physical properties. The process name is not a material specification.

Compare the practical details

Question What to review
How does the face feel? A representative dry and wet sample
How do the edges meet? The actual edge and planned joint width
How will it be cleaned? Texture, pores and compatible products
Will it be used near water? Surface performance and site requirements
Does it match coping? Both samples, profiles and dimensions

No finish name gives a universal non-slip guarantee. Soap, dirt, algae, coatings and moisture can change a surface.

Choose for the project

For a pool deck, include wet conditions and cleaning. For a patio, include weather exposure and drainage. For an interior floor, include spills and the chosen maintenance routine.

Sealing travertine is optional. If you choose to seal, a sealer can change the appearance or surface behavior. Test the proposed product and confirm compatibility before full application. Limestone and Shellstone have separate product requirements; read those before installation.

How should you compare finish samples?

  1. Record the stone name and finish for each sample.
  2. Look at the face and edge together. Check pores, filled areas and edge shape separately.
  3. Compare the dry and wet sample in the intended light.
  4. Review the cleaning method and any proposed sealer with the installer.
  5. Keep the chosen product and finish in the written estimate.

A sample review helps you compare appearance and feel. It does not replace product-specific surface test information or the installer’s assessment for the site.

Link finish to a named product

Compare marble pavers and travertine pavers. Read marble pool-deck selection for material-specific questions.

For interior travertine tile, use brushed and chiseled versus honed and filled finishes. Keep the approved finish in the estimate specification.

Questions and answers

Is a leathered finish the same as a polished finish?

No. Compare the named surface treatment and actual sample. Do not use the terms interchangeably.

Does tumbled mean the stone is filled?

No. Tumbled and filled describe different processes. Check whether the selected product is filled or unfilled.

Can I compare wet performance by finish name alone?

No. Review the actual stone and surface with the installer for the intended use.
