Understand the selection
A grade name describes a supplier selection. It is not a universal test standard. Ask which characteristics the supplier uses to separate the selections.
Travertine naturally contains pores and holes. Distinguish these features from damage and from openings that affect the intended use.
Compare more than the face

A stone can have an attractive face and still need careful installation. Inspection should include edges and the back as well as the top.
Consider exposure and loads
Freeze/thaw exposure, wet areas and vehicle traffic need separate assessment. Grade names alone cannot establish approval. Drainage and support remain important.
Do not assume all Standard Grade or Premium Select material has the same absorption or strength. Review the actual selection offered.
Check coverage before purchase
The 1-year Limited Warranty has specific covered products and installation conditions. Do not apply it to every material or grade.
Read porosity and cold-climate planning. Compare travertine pavers with an approved sample and written specification.
Get the selection in writing
Use the same details when comparing offers:
- The named product, selection, finish and thickness.
- The stated range of natural voids and color.
- The quantity, crate coverage, freight and unloading services.
- The warranty and return terms that apply to that grade and order method.
Keep the sample and confirmed estimate with the order. A grade name or unit price alone does not describe the material and delivered scope.

Is Premium Select a laboratory standard?
No. It is a selection name. Laboratory tests use separate methods and report properties of the tested material.
Are all visible holes defects?
No. Natural voids are expected in travertine. Review the selection, size and intended use before deciding whether a piece is unsuitable.
