Pressure Cleaning Travertine Pavers

2 minute read Material selection and project planning

Pressure cleaning can damage travertine or its joints if used aggressively. Check the stone, sealer and joint requirements before you start.

Choose the least aggressive method

Start with loose-debris removal and a stone-compatible cleaner. A soft brush may be enough for routine dirt. A pressure washer is not the first answer to every stain.

Identify oil, rust, organic marks or mineral deposits before treatment. The correct cleaner depends on the cause.

Check the whole installation

Pressure can affect natural voids, edges, fill and joint material. It can also change an existing treatment. Inspect the paving before cleaning.

Check the joint-product and sealer instructions. Do not remove joint material and leave the installation unsupported.

Test before broader work

  1. Confirm whether the selected stone and joint system permit pressure cleaning.
  2. Use the equipment settings approved for that system.
  3. Test a small inconspicuous area.
  4. Inspect the surface and joints after drying.
  5. Stop if material erodes or the finish changes.

There is no single pressure or nozzle distance that suits all natural-stone installations. Do not use a general setting as a guarantee.

Check the result

Inspect for lost joint material, new surface marks or treatment changes. Let the area dry before deciding whether more cleaning is necessary.

A recurring damp stain can indicate a moisture problem. Review drainage rather than repeatedly increasing cleaning force.

Questions and answers

Can pressure washing remove stone from the surface?

Aggressive pressure can damage natural voids, edges or fill. Test and follow the installation-system requirements.

Should I reseal immediately after pressure cleaning?

Assess the existing treatment and follow the sealer supplier’s instructions. Do not apply sealer to wet or unsuitable stone.
