French Pattern combines several stone sizes in one layout. Plan the module, edges and cuts before calculating crates or setting the first piece.
Confirm the product module
A French Pattern product contains more than one face size. The common travertine pattern includes 8×8, 8×16, 16×16 and 16×24 pieces.
Check the actual product specification. A pattern offered in marble, limestone or another stone may need its own module and quantity check. Do not mix products based only on the pattern name.
Draw the layout
Measure the usable paved area. Mark borders, drains, columns, steps and pool edges. Determine the pattern direction before installation.
Include the selected joint spacing in the drawing. A module drawn without the intended joints can produce a different finished dimension.
Plan borders and cuts
A rectangular border changes where the pattern stops. Pool curves and narrow areas can create more cuts than an open rectangle.
Ask your installer to identify repeat modules and cut pieces. Keep whole pieces where the layout permits. Do not place a short cut in a location that needs greater support.
Calculate from the actual crates
Check coverage per crate for the selected product. Divide the measured area by that coverage, then review full-crate requirements and project allowance.
Do not use a coverage figure from another thickness or material. Confirm any additional border or coping product separately.
Our estimate workspace gives a place to review the material quantity with the team. Ask your installer to set the allowance for the actual layout.
How do you calculate the number of crates?
- Record the measured area that will use the pattern.
- Add the allowance specified by the installer for this layout.
- Divide that total by the coverage of one crate of the exact product.
- If full crates are required, round the result up to a whole crate.
- List border and coping products separately so their quantities are not counted twice.
Required crates = (pattern area + installer’s allowance) ÷ coverage per crate, rounded up when ordering full crates. Keep all area figures in the same unit.
For the written estimate, record the product name, stone, thickness, crate coverage and crate count. Use the estimate guide to submit the quantities.
Dry-lay and blend
- Open material from the planned crates.
- Check the supplied sizes against the module.
- Dry-lay a representative area.
- Blend tones across the pattern.
- Confirm borders and joint spacing.
- Approve the layout before permanent fixing.

Browse travertine pavers and travertine tiles. Read color variation and sand-set planning.
For an exterior marble pattern, review marble finish and care. The same layout does not establish the same installation requirements.
Questions and answers
Does every French Pattern crate have the same coverage?
No. Read the selected product’s coverage and module. Material, thickness and packing can differ.
Can I use tile and pavers in the same module?
Do not mix them without an approved design. Thickness and installation requirements can differ.
Should I calculate only the paved area?
Start with the measured area, then review cuts, borders and a project-specific allowance with the installer.
