Travertine pavers can be installed over a suitable concrete slab with a compatible flexible mortar system. Check the slab, drainage, movement and finished height before you order.
Inspect the existing slab
A bonded installation relies on the slab below it. Check stability, cracks, moisture and drainage. Filling a visible crack does not establish that the slab is sound.
Ask an installer to identify the cause of movement. An active structural problem needs a suitable repair or a different design.
Check finished height and water
Add the paver thickness to the specified setting layers. Check door thresholds, steps and pool edges. Confirm that water can leave the surface.
Do not cover a drainage problem with stone. The finished paving should work with the designed slope, drains and surrounding levels.
Choose a compatible bonded system
The setting material must suit exterior natural stone, the substrate and expected exposure. Follow the manufacturer’s minimum and maximum bed thickness.
A mortar marketed as flexible does not replace movement joints. Some projects need a membrane or a separate water-management detail.
Plan the installation
- Assess and prepare the slab.
- Confirm the drainage and movement-joint layout.
- Dry-lay the pavers and blend tones.
- Use the specified setting materials and coverage.
- Keep designed movement joints open for their specified treatment.
- Protect the surface for the required curing period.
Review coverage and alternatives
Read the installation guide and sand-set installation guide. The 1-year Limited Warranty includes eligible flexible mortar installations, subject to its product, installation and claim conditions. Other mortar-set, mud-set or grout-set applications are excluded.
Compare travertine pavers only after your installer confirms the complete system.
Questions and answers
Can I bond pavers over any old concrete?
No. The slab must suit the proposed system. Stability, drainage and movement need assessment.
Does flexible mortar prevent all freeze/thaw damage?
No. Material selection, water management, climate and the complete system affect performance.
Does the warranty include flexible mortar installation?
Yes. Eligible flexible mortar installations are included. Confirm that the product and complete installation meet the full warranty terms before work starts.
