Understand the exposure
Freeze/thaw cycles can damage materials when retained water freezes. An installation that holds water needs attention. Stone selection and water management must work together.
Review the site climate and exposure. Include snow, meltwater and shaded areas where moisture remains.
Use product-specific evidence
Our Premium Select travertine products have associated laboratory information. Read the results for the selected product. A laboratory test does not reproduce every site condition.
Do not apply travertine results to marble, limestone or shellstone. Review each material separately.
Plan a suitable base
Travertine Mart recommends reviewing dry-set installation for cold-climate projects. The base, bedding, edge restraints and joint material must suit the site.
Water must drain from the surface and the installation below it. Mortar described as flexible does not correct poor drainage or replace movement joints.
Check the warranty before installation
The 1-year Limited Warranty identifies covered products, eligible dry-set and flexible mortar installations, and required documents. Read the conditions for your selected product and method before work starts.
Do not assume that every installation of a covered stone is itself covered. Keep the invoice, installer information and installation photographs.
Prepare a winter maintenance plan
- Use cleaning products approved for the stone.
- Check deicing products with the stone supplier and, if you chose to seal the stone, the sealer manufacturer.
- Keep drainage routes clear.
- Investigate standing water before freezing conditions.

Does a freeze/thaw test guarantee my installation?
No. It describes the tested sample and conditions. Site performance also depends on installation and exposure.
Does the travertine warranty cover marble or limestone?
