Shellstone Pavers: Installation and Care

3 minute read Material selection and project planning

Shellstone is limestone with visible shell and fossil features. Its porous surface needs careful selection, installation, sealing and maintenance.

What makes shellstone distinct

The shell and fossil fragments are part of the natural material. They can vary in size and distribution. Pores and changes in tone are also expected.

Our Shellstone pavers have pale cream, off-white, beige and light tan tones. The face is not a repeated printed pattern. Review a physical sample before selecting the full order.

Assess the intended use

The catalogue describes patios, pool decks, courtyards and walkways. Confirm the exact product and site conditions with a qualified installer.

Do not assume a listed pedestrian use establishes driveway suitability. Vehicle loads, base support and stone properties need separate assessment.

For a pool deck, discuss the wet surface, drainage and salt-water exposure. Finish names and fossil markings do not provide a universal slip rating.

Follow the installation requirements

The current Shellstone product pages specify mineral-free sand and/or white thin-set, as appropriate for the project. Seal both sides before installation.

Coordinate the sealer with the bonding system. Confirm all materials with the installer and the product suppliers. Avoid contamination from unsuitable bedding or setting materials.

What must be confirmed before Shellstone is laid?

  1. Read the installation requirements for the exact Shellstone product.
  2. Confirm mineral-free sand and/or white thin-set for the selected system.
  3. Confirm a compatible sealer and its application instructions with the installer and product suppliers.
  4. Seal both sides before installation, as the current Shellstone product pages require.
  5. Approve the base, drainage and finished levels before laying the stone.

The optional-sealing guidance for travertine does not replace these Shellstone product requirements.

Manage moisture and staining

Shellstone is highly porous and can be prone to discoloration and staining. A sealer can reduce some absorption but does not make the stone maintenance-free.

Plan the drainage before laying the pavers. Check irrigation and areas where water remains. Diagnose persistent damp marks or deposits before treatment.

Choose the layout

Compare 16×24 Shellstone pavers with 6×12 Shellstone pavers. The larger rectangle creates a different layout from the compact format.

Check crate coverage and required cuts. Blend pieces through a dry-laid sample area to review the range of fossil markings and tones.

Record the chosen size, thickness and coverage per crate in the itemized estimate. Keep the installer’s cut allowance separate from the measured area so the material quantity can be reviewed.

Plan care and coping

Use limestone-compatible cleaners. Do not use vinegar or general acidic cleaners. Record the sealer and maintenance instructions.

This material is not covered under the travertine-specific 1-year Limited Warranty. For a Shellstone deck, confirm available coping and profile options with our team.

Read limestone installation and sealing and coping coordination before final approval.

Questions and answers

Are shell marks defects in Shellstone?

Natural shell and fossil features are expected. Review the range separately from transport damage or a specification mismatch.

Does Shellstone need special setting materials?

Follow the product requirement for mineral-free sand and/or white thin-set, plus sealing both sides before installation.

Does Shellstone have the same warranty as Premium Select travertine?

No. The current Shellstone product pages exclude the travertine-specific 1-year Limited Warranty.
