Not every house is blessed with spacious bathrooms – especially older homes. But just because your space is a little teenier doesn’t mean you have to settle for less than the best when it comes to design.
As Better Homes and Gardens magazine pointed out, there’s one big bonus of having a small bathroom: You get to splurge on the details, since you won’t need as many of them! Here are a few ways you can ensure that your bathroom is making a significant impact on your home’s decor.
Install travertine tile
Travertine installation is a superb choice for a bathroom, particularly a small one that needs to make a bigger impression. From the floors, to the countertop, to the backsplash, to the shower, there’s no bad place to put some new travertine tiles in a bathroom!
When you take the time to consider your tile placement and ensure that each stone complements the natural patterns in the ones next to it, you’ll set yourself up with a classy backdrop that’s not only gorgeous, but easy to maintain.
Choose space-saving elements
This Old House magazine recommended finding decor items that offer space-saving benefits. For example, take advantage of shelves and wall space instead of using floor space for a cabinet to hold toiletries. Or, use towel racks or hooks that extend sideways instead of out into the room.
Create a dynamic focal point
To make a big decorative impact without overpowering the small space, Better Homes and Gardens suggested using an accent wall or piece of artwork as an interesting focal point. One wall painted a different color than the rest or covered in wallpaper isn’t overbearing, but it’ll definitely stand out.
Just be sure to choose a light paint color or a wallpaper with a medium or small pattern to avoid making the bathroom look smaller than it really is.
Reconsider the lighting
Bright fluorescent lights over the sink or shower are not only unflattering to those who use the bathroom, but they can illuminate every nook and cranny of the bathroom and make it’s size painfully obvious.
For a little more mystery and a better bathroom experience, opt for more natural light in the space, which is softer and subtler. Lighter window treatments or a skylight or two are perfect choices. For nighttime, consider installing dimmer switches so you have more control.
