CNN recently spoke to a number of professional decorators who explained that kitchens don’t work like other rooms and it isn’t always easy to decorate them. Rather than having four blank walls like you do in other rooms, the kitchen has countertops, cabinet doors and appliances that people have to work around. This is why you may want to start with the floors, and put in travertine tile that may give you inspiration for how to decorate the rest of the room. The beautiful neutral colors in travertine tiles will allow you to paint the rest of the kitchen whatever color you like – as long as it goes with the contemporary elegance of travertine.
Think of the whole kitchen
Why keep travertine on the floors alone? You can also use this stone to add some glam to your countertops, which are an important part of the overall design of your kitchen.
“You have to look at decorating your kitchen in a different way,” said “Chic on a Shoestring” decorator Kate Connor. “It’s not harder, just different. The color of your cabinets, the hardware of the cabinets, your backsplash and countertops all make up the decor in your kitchen, whether you like them or not. People don’t think of these things as decor, but they set the tone of the whole room. If they are outdated it can be difficult to decorate around them.”
Once you’ve tackled the floors and countertops, you should move on to the cabinets. CNN recommended trying two-toned cabinets. The news source spoke to one woman who used gray paint on the bottom cabinets of the kitchen in her last home and alabaster white on the top. She also used chalkboard paint in some parts of her kitchen, which can be very clever. Rather than having to write your grocery list on a whiteboard in the kitchen, you can put chalkboard paint wherever you’d like and write things there.
You may also want to rethink the lighting in your kitchen. Some people may think that they have to have harsh overhead lighting in their kitchen so they can clearly see what they’re doing while they’re cooking. However, you should also put some small lamps in your kitchen to make it cozier for when you want to have a midnight snack without all of the lights on, or if you and your significant other want to have a quiet, romantic meal in there rather than set everything up in your dining room.
HGTV spoke to Randall Whitehead, a lighting designer in San Francisco, who said that the best kitchen lighting setup is one that’s layered for both task and ambiance, which is why you may want overhead lights and lamps.
