How to Choose Pavers for a Pool Deck or Patio

Start with the way you will use the space. Then compare the material, surface finish, size, and installation requirements.

Which paver material should you choose?

No single material is correct for every site. The selected product and its surface finish are important. The installation plan is also important.

Travertine

Travertine is natural stone. Its color and surface holes vary between pieces. Compare the surface texture and edge shape.

Marble

Marble is natural stone. Its veins and color vary between pieces. Compare several samples to see these differences.

Shellstone

Shellstone is natural stone with visible shell and fossil marks. These marks vary between pieces. Compare samples if you want to see this variation.

Do you also want to compare porcelain?

Porcelain is a manufactured material. It is not natural stone. Floor Finder shows natural stone by default. Clear the “Natural stone only” check box to include porcelain products.

How should you check paver samples?

  1. Put the samples beside your pool edge, wall, or other fixed surface.
  2. Compare their colors in the light at your site.
  3. Look at the samples when they are dry and wet.
  4. Check the surface texture and edge shape.
  5. Ask which color differences you can expect in the full order.

A sample shows part of the stone’s color range. It does not show every piece in your order. A visual check does not measure slip resistance.

What must you check before installation?

Give your installer the product name, size, thickness, and finish. Ask the installer to check these items for your site:

  • The base and drainage.
  • The requirements for wet areas.
  • The effects of freezing conditions, if applicable.
  • The joint spacing and installation method.
  • The expected loads, especially for vehicle access.

Do not select a product for a driveway from its thickness alone. Ask for confirmation that the product and installation method are correct for the expected loads.

Read the installation guidance.

Do you need pool coping as well as pavers?

Pavers cover the walking surface. Pool coping forms the finished pool edge. Check the coping profile, dimensions, and thickness against the pool design.

Read the pool coping guide to compare sizes, edge shapes, colors, and quantities. Then browse pool coping products.

What do you need for a price estimate?

  • The product name and selected size.
  • The area in square feet.
  • The pool edge length, if you need coping.
  • The extra quantity your installer requires for cuts.
  • The delivery ZIP code and site access details.

Check the price unit on each product. A price per square foot measures area. A price per linear foot measures length. Do not compare these prices as equal units.

Shipping is quoted per order. Ask for the full delivered cost before you compare offers. Confirm the delivery time before you schedule installation.
