Before every great DIYer embarks on their next project, they must have a plan. Here is our checklist to help you start on the right path.
1. Know your Area
The environment in which you will be tackling your travertine project must not be underestimated. Make sure you take proper measurements of where you would like your pavers installed. Also, take into account different elevations. If you do not have a flat surface throughout you may have to adjust accordingly. Level out your area by using the correct leveling compounds. Remember, if placing travertine in an area that will be exposed to moisture, seal appropriately.
2. Think about its use
Will this area be exposed to a lot of moisture? Will there be many people walking on it daily? Will I be using it as a countertop where it will be exposed to different kinds of foods and liquids? These are just some of the many elements your travertine may face and all need careful consideration when planning out your project.
3. Gather as much information as possible
Reading forums, blogs, and watching videos on travertine installations will allow you to learn where others have failed. The internet provides incredible access to information the DIYer never had before. If necessary, seek out the advice of professionals if you are not feeling absolutely comfortable. You can find great resources on our travertine blog for advice on how to install your travertine pavers.
4. Gather all of your tools and materials
Do you have the proper adhesive for your application? Do you have the proper grout? Do you have the proper tools for spreading your adhesive? Not having the proper knowledge of which tools and materials you will need is a bad start to any project. Use your time on #3 gathering information to find an individual who has worked on a similar project to yours. They might be able to shed some light on what they found worked best for their application.
5. See it before you do it
Don’t forget to lay out your tiles ahead of time so you can see how the finished product will look. Thinking that one can just eye it and place one tile at a time can lead to big problems. Adjust the tiles accordingly until you have the desired look. Taking photos from different angles will allow you to remember where you had your pavers just in case they get misplaced for some reason.
